Wi-Fi The Basics
Discover how your city is becoming liberated from the hassle of wires with the BT Wireless Broadband network.

How it works

First things first

Wireless Broadband is also referred to as Wi-Fi. Wireless Broadband lets users surf the internet, check email, connect to their corporate intranet, or even make calls and play games using a high-speed wireless connection.

The 'broadband' element of Wi-Fi means that connection speeds are typically up to 10 times quicker than both traditional dial-up and existing mobile access services. The 'wireless' element means there's no need to fiddle around with cables or hunt for a free space to plug in your laptop.

How does it work?

The Wireless Broadband coverage is created by placing discreet wireless transmitters to street furniture – like lampposts and payphone kiosks – around city centres. A high density of transmitters across the city centre area greatly reduces the areas where the signal drops out.

According to a recent report by jiwire, there are already over 16,000 hotspots in the UK where Wi-Fi can be used. Globally, there are over 140,000 - and the numbers are rising fast.
