As you study your course, we expect that you'll make your own, personal sense of what you read, see and hear. To begin with, you may expect to find the 'right answer' in your texts. As time goes on, you'll be more likely to engage with your texts to see what they say and decide what you think about them.
As you make your way through the course, look out for the signs that you're becoming an independent learner, someone who's forming personal judgements about what you're studying and
- feeling at ease with the absence of hard-and-fast answers
- seeing things from different perspectives
- being open to new ideas
- having the confidence to interrogate the course material
- recognising that the texts may express the current view of things and that this could change
Once you've extended your intellectual repertoire, you'll be better able to plan your own development and to bring it about.
