To learn mathematics, you need to practise techniques and work through new problems. Just reading the text is not enough!

Here are some tips.
  • Check that you understand the ideas and similar examples in the text, before you start.
  • Check that you understand the question and the instructions. Highlight key words.
  • Can you work out a rough estimate for the answer first?
  • Try to explain your ideas clearly.
  • Check that your final answer is reasonable in the context of the problem.
  • If the solutions are provided, check your work to see if it is correct and that you have included enough detail. Note alternative methods of solution.
  • Work through as many examples as you can (or until you feel confident!) in the time available.
  • Mark any problems you find difficult, to discuss with other students or your tutor. Colour coded sticky tabs can be useful for this!
  • Highlight or make a note of any important points or techniques that you have learnt from doing the questions.
